This is my tenth year making a card for the holiday season and I wanted to do something extra special. Astronomical twilight is the darkest of the three twilight phases, but if you look closely, the light emitted from night sky is enough to bring your surroundings into focus. The longer your eyes linger, the more details begin to emerge. Perhaps the trees are dancing in the breeze. Perhaps there is a pattern forming from the ripples in the water. Perhaps you aren’t as alone as you thought. As the year comes to a close, it indeed feels very dark, but I like to think that in this moment of quiet reflection, before the dawn begins to break, that anything is possible.

For the past five years, I’ve been making an annual “holiday card”, though these cards have had more of a focus on the winter solstice than any commercialized holiday. This year’s card is perhaps the most peculiar, but it comes at the end of a year that has been anything but normal. For me, it has a feeling of spending winter in the woods, perhaps nestled in a cabin somewhere reading by the flicker of candlelight. A combination of seasonal comforts combined with the feeling of isolation, something that most of us are all too familiar with these days. But on these dreariest of days, perhaps writing a letter and bringing a little light into the lives of those we love is exactly what we all need right now.
